Narrative Mindworks chats with Ryan McCarthy about Appalachian stories and storytelling. Ryan McCarthy is an old-fashioned internal medicine doctor, one who works in office and hospital settings in his hometown of Martinsburg, WV. Dr. McCarthy is also a faculty member of the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine. In the spring 2020 he created Healthcare is Human (HIH) to chronicle his COVID-19 pandemic experience. HIH is a partnership of talented artists, exploring meanings in all aspects of healthcare, and creating beautiful artifacts in the process.
