Text and Context: In his paper Against Narrativity, Galen Strawson argues that not all human experiences fit neatly into a narrative structure. Strawson is not the only scholar to take this position, which raises some important questions:
-
Does the field of narrative medicine risk oversimplifying or romanticizing the concept of narrative?
-
Are we possibly emphasizing the benefits of narrative medicine while overlooking the complexities and contradictions inherent in this approach?
-
Which narrative medicine methods work in non-clinical settings?
Narrative Mindworks Chat is a dynamic forum dedicated to exploring timely, challenging, and thorny narrative topics such as "Can empathy be taught?" and "Which narratives are silenced?" We invite our panelists to kick off the discussion by presenting their insights. They may highlight underemphasized points, raise questions or challenges posed by the piece. The moderator then opens the discussion for attendees to share their opinions, views and contribute to the dialogue. The facilitator wraps up the chat with a summary and resources.
